Section DRead this paragraph and answer the two questions below. The globalisation of economies and ease of travel have led to a growing interest in international student exchange. Formal programs have existed for decades, and therefore, many universities have culturally and ethnically diverse student populations, who see relocation as an investment to enrich their future careers. Exchange opportunities provide students with new experiences, which can result in a boost to their self-confidence. Research funding and status are two reasons for university administrators to recruit exchange students. A survey of administrators of international campus-based students shows that exchange students are recruited for their varied backgrounds and points of view. The amount of diversity at universities differs greatly by country and institution. For some, an intake of ethnic minorities, or students over the age of 25 is unusual. For others, women have broken the barriers to what were all-male courses of study. What is certain, however, is that quality exchange-student programs are a worldwide and growing phenomenon.
