Question textSection FRead the text on ethical fashion and answer the following questions. 1. The fashion industry has gained attention for its harmful environmental and social impact, creating pressure to find alternative business models. This is especially true for fast fashion, which is designed to provide high fashion at low cost. The poor quality of cheap mass-produced clothes forces customers to buy more. Despite the economic gains, the model of quick turnover, high volume, and low prices cannot continue as it has done in the past. 2. From production to retail, the fashion industry is growing. It is a powerful industry with a wide influence. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP 2020) report on the current state of the industry found that clothing production has doubled since 2005. Consumers are purchasing 60% more clothing than 10 years ago. The fashion industry now generates over 2% of the world's GDP, and this is set to rise. Despite awareness of its faults, demand for fast fashion is still growing at a faster pace than sustainable options. 3. The environmental and human costs of fashion are far too high. Clothing production contributes to pollution and greenhouse gas emissions and diminishes natural resources. According to the UNEP, fabric production requires large amounts of land, energy, and chemicals. It is the second-largest consumer of water worldwide and is responsible for 20% of industrial water pollution. Approximately 60% of the materials used are made from plastic, which ends up in landfill or the ocean. It contributes 10% of global carbon emissions, more than its fair share. The industry is also known to exploit workers. Of the 300 million people working in fashion production, 60 million produce fast fashion. They are very likely to experience low wages and unsafe working conditions. 4. Change at every level, therefore, is needed to create a more sustainable and fair fashion industry. In its report, the UNEP identified various groups who play key roles. The first group is shoppers, who are more powerful than they realize. Ordinary people can easily make choices that drive change and encourage new approaches. They can choose to buy sustainable brands and buy less clothing. They can also extend the use of their clothes by repairing and recycling them. These actions would lead to greater availability of ethical products, while reducing demand for fast fashion. 5. The UNEP report has also made important recommendations for policy makers and corporate executives. Many brands have already committed to improve their practices, but supporters of the environment demand more action. For example, they can invest in the research and development of new materials, and work with suppliers to encourage new business models. Most importantly, businesses can upgrade their production processes. Using renewable energy and recycling resources from their own production processes reduces pollution, water usage, and waste. Some governments have also taken action, including France, which has banned destroying new clothing, and the European Union, which has regulations around landfill and recycling. Other countries have created incentives to make adopting sustainable production practices more attractive. However, a wider approach is more likely to ensure that the fashion industry operates in a sustainable and ethical manner. 6. Adopting a circular economy model as a sustainable economic system holds great potential to increase efficiency. It will, at the same time, reduce environmental damage. Its goals are to eliminate waste and pollution through improved design, to keep products and materials in use for longer, and to restore natural systems. Fashion can achieve these by making stronger clothing which can be easily repaired. They can also establish recycling procedures for the fabric, and promote second-hand markets and sharing platforms. While there is concern regarding this model in terms of profitability, it can provide economic growth by reducing the cost to fashion companies of new raw materials and energy resources. These fair and profitable practices can reduce waste and pollution and protect natural resources. 7. The damage caused by the fashion industry cannot be ignored any longer. Smarter shopping habits can influence the direction companies take. Cooperation between businesses and governments is essential to drive change through increased regulation, new practices, and incentive policies. The circular economy model may not seem appealing or profitable, and it requires universal support. However, the shift towards this approach would create a less harmful fashion industry. By promoting sustainable practices, a profitable fashion business model that benefits consumers, fashion brands and the planet is possible.Questions 19 – 22.
