Despite on-going and disruptive oil mining, significantly more species are found in the native forests within the vast oil exploration sites than in other parts of the country. Tree kangaroos, for example, are the most commonly hunted endangered mammal in the country. Most of those that survive have adapted their behaviour to be active only in darkness. However, those within the mining sites have maintained their ability to be active during daylight, and thrive due to prohibited hunting in those undisturbed native forests.
