Rowling’s construction of a threat to women and girls as motivation for a populist movement against trans rights makes use of a “rhetorical figure” that Alyosxa Tudor calls “the weaponization of accusations of violence.”21 In doing so, gender critical feminists like Rowling are trying to gain more power for themselves by presenting their movement as targeted by violence.22 Claiming to protect women and girls from threats of violence from a group identified as an enemy has rhetorical roots in historicalcalls to protect White women from sexual violence perpetrated by Black men.23 The threat of violence against women and girls is used rhetorically to justify violence against the targeted group.
